Kathmandu: The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged Israel to permit the stockpiling of essential medical supplies before a potential assault on Gaza City, warning of a worsening health crisis. The appeal comes amid global criticism of Israel’s plan to take control of Gaza City.
Gaza Hospitals on the Brink
WHO representative for the Palestinian territories, Rick Peppercorn, revealed that Gaza’s medical stockpile is nearly depleted, standing at zero to 52% capacity. “We want to deliver supplies to hospitals quickly before any attack, but that is currently impossible,” Peppercorn said.
Only 50% of hospitals and 38% of primary health centers in Gaza remain partially operational. Hospitals are severely overcrowded — Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza is operating at 240% capacity, while Al-Ahli Hospital has reached 300%.
Rising Hunger and Malnutrition
Beyond the medical emergency, hunger and malnutrition are escalating. Since January, 148 people have died from malnutrition. In July alone, nearly 12,000 children under five were identified as acutely malnourished, marking a record high. Of these, 2,562 children are in severe condition.
Israel Restricting Humanitarian Aid
WHO reports that many humanitarian supplies are still being blocked by Israel, worsening the crisis. The organization has stressed the urgent need for access to prevent further loss of life in Gaza.
